16th Annual Golden Heart Recipients Announced

April 19, 2018 - The Volunteer Center of Door County celebrated the 16th Annual Golden Heart Volunteer Celebration “Volunteers- The Heart of the Community” honoring the incredible work of Door County volunteers and the agencies they serve. The 2018 award recipients are:

Adult: Lori Vorpahl, representing many different organizations

Environmental Stewardship: Gretchen Recupero Schmelzer, Crossroads of Big Creek

Group: Door County Habitat for Humanity Construction Volunteers

Youth Scholarship: Olivia James Van Den Heuvel 

Karl May Lifetime of Service Award:  Shirley Senarighi, representing many different organizations

The Golden Heart Celebration was held on Thursday, April 20!

The Volunteer Center of Door County celebrated the 15th Annual Golden Heart Volunteer Celebration “What a Difference You’ve Made.” on Thursday, April 20. Guests celebrated at the Stone Harbor Ballroom honoring the incredible work of Door County volunteers and the agencies they serve.

Grace Rossman shared her “three pretty good ideas” related to volunteerism. She encouraged those in attendance to use their time wisely, have a servant-heart and remember that non-profit organizations are businesses. She inspired the audience with her combination of humor, anecdotes and advice. Pam Seiler and Dan Tjernagel served as the Master of Ceremonies. Each nominee received a complimentary dinner and a crystal sun catcher created by Grace Rossman and Tara Niko Rossman was given to each honoree.

Award recipients received $500 to donate to a Door County charity of their choice in addition to a custom designed art piece by Chad Luberger of Plum Bottom Pottery. Three youth scholarship recipients receive a $500 academic scholarship. The 2017 award recipients are:

  • Adult: Sheila Petroni, Neighbor to Neighbor
  • Arts & Culture: Bill Freyman, Door County Maritime Museum
  • Environmental Stewardship: Jane Whitney, Bjorklunden
  • Group: Door County Medical Center Auxiliary
  • Youth: Kayla Marchant, Southern Door High School
  • Paige Sullivan, Sturgeon Bay High School
  • Julia DeMain, Sevastapol High School
  • Lifetime of Service: Nancy Hutchinson

The Volunteer Center is pleased to host this community building event to support volunteerism in Door County with support from Door County Medical Center, Nicolet National Bank, Wisconsin Public Service Foundation and many other local businesses and organizations.
