16th Annual Golden Heart Recipients Announced

April 19, 2018 - The Volunteer Center of Door County celebrated the 16th Annual Golden Heart Volunteer Celebration “Volunteers- The Heart of the Community” honoring the incredible work of Door County volunteers and the agencies they serve. The 2018 award recipients are:

Adult: Lori Vorpahl, representing many different organizations

Environmental Stewardship: Gretchen Recupero Schmelzer, Crossroads of Big Creek

Group: Door County Habitat for Humanity Construction Volunteers

Youth Scholarship: Olivia James Van Den Heuvel 

Karl May Lifetime of Service Award:  Shirley Senarighi, representing many different organizations

The Volunteer Center of Door County celebrated the 16th Annual Golden Heart Volunteer Celebration “Volunteers- The Heart of the Community” on Thursday, April 19, 2018. Guests celebrated at the Stone Harbor Ballroom honoring the incredible work of Door County volunteers and the agencies they serve.

Julie LaLuzerne, a lifelong member of the Door County Community, and Grants Manager at the Raibrook Foundation in Sturgeon Bay. Julie provided the keynote address "How the Volunteer Center Impacted My Life." From finding a volunteer opportunity with a search on the Volunteer Center of Door County's website, Julie catapulted her passion for dogs into action to visit assisted living homes and now schools. Pam Seiler and Dan Tjernagel served as the Master of Ceremonies. Each nominee received a complimentary dinner and a crystal sun catcher created by Grace Rossman and Tara Niko Rossman.

Award recipients received $500 to donate to a Door County charity of their choice in addition to a custom designed art piece by Chad Luberger of Plum Bottom Pottery. Olivia James Van Den Heuvel received a $500 academic scholarship. The 2018 award recipients are:
